Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) is an adventure filled with unexpected twists and turns, and my recent journey through Castle Crags to Etna was no exception. This stretch of the trail offered a unique blend of challenges and surprises, from navigating trail conditions and wildlife encounters to the intriguing question of signage quality.
The Trail's Tale
As I ventured from Castle Crags, the trail conditions varied, with blowdowns and water availability being constant concerns. However, what truly stood out was the exceptional signage in Castle Crags State Park. It made me wonder: why was the signage here so much better than in the National Parks and Forests I had previously traversed? Was it a matter of timing, or was there a dedicated individual behind these well-maintained signs?
A Day's Journey
Day 91 began with a ride back to the trail, and I was soon rewarded with breathtaking views of Castle Crags. The day's hike was filled with energy, thanks to an unseen rattlesnake's warning rattle. Camping on a windswept saddle, I was joined by Scrap and Jug, fellow hikers I had met earlier. Their presence added a social element to an otherwise solitary journey.
Sunset Spectacle
Day 92 brought a long hike and the most spectacular sunset I had witnessed on the trail so far. The day's highlight was meeting Glitz and Oxiclean, who joined me at my campsite. We chatted well into the night, sharing stories and enjoying the changing hues of the sky.
Cow Bells and Surprises
Day 93 started with an unexpected sound - cow bells! Free-range cattle, a first for me, added an element of surprise to the trail. I also had the pleasure of meeting Zipline, a French hiker I had previously encountered in the Sierras, and Jayden, a seasonal USFS ranger. Jayden's work schedule of hiking the trails for 7 days on and off sounded like a dream job to me.
A Long Day's Journey
The journey on Day 93 was a long and tiring one, but it ended with a rewarding camp by the South Fork of Scott River. I was joined by familiar faces - Jug, Scrap, and Blue Moon - and we were later joined by another hiker. The day's hike, though challenging, was made more enjoyable by the company and the beauty of the trail.
Hitching a Ride
Day 94 saw me covering 20 miles to reach the road to Etna. The hike started with an uphill climb but eventually led to downhill sections. Despite a light rain, I persevered, and my efforts were rewarded when a pickup truck offered me a ride to Etna. The kindness of strangers never ceases to amaze me, and this ride was a welcome surprise.
A Well-Deserved Break
Etna, a charming town, offered a much-needed break. Although the brewery and distillery were closed, I enjoyed coffee and tacos. I was reunited with Glitz and Oxy, and I also met Hi & Bye and Taxi, fellow hikers with impressive daily mileages.
Reflections
The journey through Castle Crags to Etna was a testament to the unpredictability and beauty of the PCT. From signage quality to cow bells and kind strangers, each day brought new experiences. It's these unexpected encounters and the sense of community along the trail that make hiking the PCT such a unique and rewarding adventure.
What makes this trail so fascinating is its ability to constantly surprise and delight, offering a different perspective with each step.
